Rectangle ABCD is similar to rectangle WXYZ with sides in a ratio of 4:1. What is the ratio of the areas of the two rectangles? Suppose the dimensions of each rectangle are tripled. What is the new ratio of the area of the rectangles? What is the effect on the ratio of the area when you increase or decrease both rectangles by the same amount? This post must have a picture of two similar rectangles.
The ratio of two rectangles are 16:1. The rectangle with the sides tripled are still a ratio of 16:1. The ratio's will be different for each sides on the rectangles.
Why? Can you explain. What happens if the ratio of the sides is 5:1? or 6:1?
